Property records are crucial to genealogists because they provide valuable information about an ancestor's property ownership, location, and other details related to their land transactions. This presentation will review land records from the Proprietary period through early statehood. In conjunction with the land records, the surviving New Jersey General Assembly tax ratable lists, containing names and details for those who had levies due based on their real and personal property, are valuable to researchers looking to supplement New Jersey's lost U.S. Federal census enumerations for 1790-1820.
